$6.3M Crypto Hackers Face Up to 20 Years in Prison
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently charged five different individuals for their role in a cryptocurrency hack that cost them $6.3 million. The defendants are associated with phishing groups “0ktapus” and “Sccatered Spider” that target technology companies and crypto platform employees; the case considers corporate sensitive data and cryptocurrencies. Removing the email element, hackers would have to use a phishing message to obtain some credentials and bypass two-factor authentication. This allowed them to gain unauthorized access to corporate networks, steal cryptocurrency, and launch cyberattacks in four countries. If convicted, the defendant will certainly face very severe punishment, up to 20 years in prison. The search for other relevant perpetrators is ongoing.
