Montenegro Signs Extradition Order For Do Kwon To The United States
According to the latest developments, Justice Minister Bojan Bozović signed the decision ordering the extradition of Do Kwon to the United States of America information.
Previously, based on extradition requests from South Korea and the United States, Montenegro’s Supreme Court ruled that the legal conditions for extradition have been met.
Notably, the Ministry of Justice reviewed the Supreme Court’s decision and considered factors such as the seriousness of the offense, the location of the offense, the order of the extradition request, Do-won’s citizenship, the possibility of further extradition, and other relevant factors. “In light of the above, having concluded that most of the criteria set forth by law support the extradition request of the competent authorities of the United States of America, the Attorney General issued a decision allowing the extradition of Kwon Do-hyung,” the Ministry of Justice noted in a statement, ” Extradite to the United States while refusing extradition to the Republic of Korea.”
For context, U.S. and South Korean authorities have been investigating Do Kwon’s role in one of the biggest disasters in cryptocurrency history. In May 2022, the value of the two cryptocurrencies he created, TerraUSD and Luna, fell, evaporating $40 billion from the cryptocurrency market, triggering a chain reaction that led to the bankruptcy of other digital encryption companies. The investigation concluded that Do Kwon lied to investors and allegedly hid wealth.
On March 23, 2023, Do Kwon and his business partner Han Chang-Joon were arrested at Podgorica Airport while trying to fly to Dubai using forged passports. He was sentenced to four months in prison in Montenegro for forging documents.
After his release, U.S. and South Korean authorities began seeking extradition. After Do Kwon was released from Spuz prison on March 23, Montenegrin police transferred him to the reception center for foreigners, where he will remain until extradition proceedings are completed.
