Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin mentioned that major changes are taking place in the leadership of the Ethereum Foundation (EF), a Swiss non-profit organization created by the blockchain’s original developers to help support and govern Ethereum. development. Despite these changes, Buterin emphasized that the foundation’s primary goals will remain the same.
In a tweet on X, he mentioned that the changes have been in the works for almost a year. Some have been announced and some are still in progress.
Buterin explained that the reorganization is aimed at increasing the technical expertise of the Ethereum Foundation’s leaders and strengthening their engagement with everyone involved in the ecosystem, from individual and enterprise users to application developers, wallet providers, and layer solutions).
The changes are also designed to attract new talent, speed up projects, and support app developers in upholding fundamental values such as privacy, open source development, and freedom from censorship.
The co-founder explained that certain areas will not be touched by the reorganization. He mentioned that there would not be a shift in their mindset to actively influence regulators or create a centralized organization influenced by a political agenda.
Vitalik said, “Becoming a highly centralized organization, or even more like a ‘protagonist’ in Ethereum: these things are not what EF does, and that will not change at all. People looking for different visions are welcome to start their own organizations. “
Buterin’s news follows recent criticism of the Ethereum Foundation’s actions and leadership, including from some of the biggest names in the Ethereum community. Ethereum co-founder and Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin suggested new leadership for the Ethereum Foundation in a recent X post. He praised current executive director Aya Miyaguchi but noted that changes were needed due to changes in the industry.

Recent leadership changes at the Ethereum Foundation include Danny Ryan, a key researcher on Ethereum’s move to proof-of-stake, who left in September 2024 after seven years.
