Convict in Undead Apes NFT Fraud Dies by Suicide Before Sentencing
Burman Jerry Nowlin, 21, was implicated in a $400,000 NFT scam and tragically took his own life on December 21, 2024, just weeks before sentencing. Nowlin was convicted of participating in the Undead Apes NFT fraud and faces federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering.
In November 2024, a U.S. court found Nowlin guilty of participating in fraud. Nowlin, along with 25-year-old Devin Alan Rhoden, helped sell two series of Solana NFTs before canceling the third series.
The fraudulent scheme included a collection of fake NFTs that defrauded hundreds of investors promising high returns. However, these claims proved false, sparking an investigation that led to convictions. The Justice Department said the scheme was successful because of misleading claims, including partnerships with well-known businesses and the promise of special benefits for buyers.
Nolin’s unexpected death adds a tragic twist to an already devastating case. His family confirmed it was a suicide and expressed their heartbreak. Sentencing was scheduled for January 2025 for Nowlin’s co-conspirator Devon Rhoden, who was also convicted in the scheme.
Nolin faced up to five years in federal prison when he was sentenced in January 2025, but tragically died by suicide just weeks before the hearing.
